KUCHING: Alfred Lau Yu Leong’s hope of making the final cut for the men’s singles was dashed yesterday on the second day of the Sukma XVIII Selection Badminton Tournament at Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) Hall.

The second seed from SBA was upstaged by joint 9/16th seed Owen Ting of Pacific Badminton Management (PBM) in three sets 14-21, 21-19, 21-19.

Owen will now play joint 3/4th seed Wilson Lau Ngie Ding after the Miri Badminton Association (MBA) shuttler showed joint 5/8th seed Darren Law of SBA the exit 21-14, 21-14.

However, the top seed Adam Lau Yu Ming had no problem in disposing of joint 5/8th seed Donaven Sujang Majang with a 21-9, 21-9 win to meet joint 3/4th seed Clement Chieng Jia Yew of PBM in the other semi-final today.

Chieng also eased past MBA’s Kam Sing Siong 21-12, 21-17.

The girls singles quarterfinals also saw an upset of two seeded players when two unseeded players Felicia Fong Xin Hui and Kristy Tay Yong both of SBA advanced to the last four.

Felicia outplayed teammate and joint 3/4th seed Viviene Kua Yun Jen 23-21, 21-15 while Kristy slayed second seed Yong Ping Ping of MBA 21-12, 21-19.
