River transportation in Banjarmasin paralyzed

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: Transportation on waters of Martapura River which divides the city of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, in the last two days was paralyzed by the magnitude piles of garbage covered the river under the bridge of Dewi and Pasar Lama bridge, AntaranewsKalsel reported.

“It was from yesterday (Saturday, 23/1) very large trash piled under the Pasar Lama Bridge and Dewi Bridge,” said one resident Syafruddin, Sunday.

Due to the amount of garbage that hooked under the bridge, none of means of transportation can passing through the river.

“It impossible to pass, because a large garbage mixed with water hyacinth stems and twigs covers nearly full of the river, even up to tens of meters heap,” he said.

Syafruddin said society can not do anything to clean it manually, because of the enormous amounts of waste that hooked two bridges, until heavy machine necessarily used for cleaning.

“We can walk on the trash, you can imagine how thick scum concerning it,” he explained.

A speedboat driver H Hamran said not dare to penetrate the amount of garbage, so he should stop to carry passengers from Banjarmasin to Buntok, Central Kalimantan.

“We are waiting for river to be cleaned or there is a gap to pass the Pasar Lama bridge, then we can transport passengers,” he said.
