BINTANGOR: Four family members were killed when the saloon car they were travelling in crashed head-on with a cargo lorry near the junction of Jalan Sing Ba along the Sarikei-Bintangor Road on Monday.

Bernama quoted district police chief DSP Mohamad Hafipi Mohd Salim as saying that those killed in the 5.45pm crash were driver Wong Ching Chiang, 22; front seat passenger Wong Ching Soon, 15; and backseat passengers Henry Ling, 15, and Su Kee Chuo, 65.

Fellow backseat passenger Kerry Ling, 11, sustained serious injuries, while the trailer truck driver and attendant, both 28, were unhurt.

The family members are said to have been on their way back to their house in Jalan Oya, Sibu when Ching Chiang is believed to have lost control of the car and crashed into the truck in the opposite lane.

The Bintangor Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received a distress call at 5.57pm.

District Bomba chief Nicholas Belulin said a team of seven firefighters was despatched to the scene around 10km from town and arrived around 10 minutes later.

He said when extricated from the wreckage, four of the victims were unconscious and later pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Kerry was rushed in an ambulance to Sarikei Hospital.

The four bodies were later taken to the Sarikei Hospital mortuary to undergo a postmortem.
