SIBU: Eight year-old Timothy Wong Siang Qi created the biggest waves when he smashed eight out of the 17 records set during the three-day Sibu Age-Group Swimming Championship at Bukit Lima Swimming Pool last weekend.

Wong, who is from SJK (C) Methodist, was adjudged the best swimmer in the Boy’s E Division with his tally of 10 gold medals.

His records came in the 100m freestyle (1min 30.61sec), 200m freestyle (3:31.26), 50m butterfly (50.15), 50m backstroke (55.79), 100m backstroke (1:58.51), 50m breaststroke (52.28), 100m breaststroke (1:56.80) and 200m individual medley (3:44.33).

Sibu Amateur Swimming Association (Sasa) coach Samuel Wong had nothing but praise for the boy and his father.

He said Timothy, whose pet stroke is the butterfly, is hardworking and always willing to listen and correct his mistakes.

“However, the biggest pulling factor is his father’s support for his son’s endeavour in making swimming his hobby by sending him to the swimming pool every day to do the training,” he added.

Meanwhile, state swimmer Cindy Sui also hit the limelight as best swimmer in Girl’s A with four records – 50m freestyle (28.44), 50m breaststroke (32.96), 100m breaststroke (1:24.94) and 200m breastsroke (3:03.78).

The record contributors were Joey Wong (Boy’s C) in the 1,500m freestyle (20:18.61), Ting Hua Ni (Girl’s E) 100m freestyle (1:36.23), Lau Teck Lung (Boy’s C) 100m backstroke (1:14.29), Nee Gui Ping (Boy’s A) 50m butterfly (26.58) and the SMK Chung Hua quartet (Boy’s A) 4x100m medley relay (4:20.10).

Gui Ping, with three gold medals, took the best swimmer title in Boy’s A.

Justin Lee Shao Jie, with his haul of 10 gold, five silver and a bronze, was best swimmer in Boy’s B. The individual title for Boy’s C and D went to Joey Wong (nine gold) and Jonathan Yek Ei Henn (seven gold) respectively.

In the Girl’s section, Nee Quiao Yuan (seven gold), Amelia Wong (eight gold), Ivy Ning Chai Yun (nine gold) and Ting Xua Ni (two gold) were best swimmers for the B, C, D and E respectively.
