MIRI: Warrior Hockey Club emerged as Girl’s champion in the 5-a-side cement hockey tournament here from Jan 23-24.

The C and B teams of Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang finished second and third respectively.

In the Boy’s competition, Team Belhoct from Belaga was first followed by Chung Hua and Have Fun. The teams received their prizes from Assistant Miri Youth and Sport Officer Aric Philbert Sehat.

Meanwhile, Mohd Nurfitri from SM Sains and Charlena Lawing from Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang were adjudged Best Male Player and Best Female Player.

They received prizes from Miri Youth and Sports Officer Gloria James Juat Miri hockey coach Rudy Naziri said he was overwhelmed by the response to the tournament which saw 24 and 12 teams for boys and girls respectively.

He then repeated a plea which has become a standard item in reports on hockey in Miri.

“With the sport becoming more and more popular now, we really hope the government can give us a proper hockey field to practice on. Our hockey players here have been doing their training on concrete field.” Anyone listening?
