SIBU: The Sarawak women’s volleyball team under chief coach Datuk Moh Wung Ming remain optimistic of winning the volleyball gold in the Sukma XVIII hosted by Sarawak from July 22-31, featuring 24 sports.

Wung Ming said his team had already started centralised training since December at the new Sibu volleyball stadium, adding that they were having two sessions daily six days a week.

“We are committed and confident of retaining the title. All my players are very committed. We started centralised training early to be fully prepared for the coming Sukma although the Sarawak State Sports Council (SSSC) has given March for all teams to start centralised training,” said Wung Ming who is also chairman of Sibu Volleyball Association.

Wung Ming, who is also the Malaysian women’s volleyball head coach for the 2017 SEA Games, said it would however be tough, with teams like Pahang and Johor fielding players from Bukit Jalil and Bandar Penawar sports schools.

He said Johor has also retained 10 players from its 2014 Sukma squad.

“Sarawak is the host state for this year’s Sukma, so it is the responsibility of all participating sports to bring glory to the state,” he said, adding that most of the events will be held in Kuching and Samarahan while Sibu hosts volleyball, badminton and Miri is the venue for sailing and karate-do.

He said five of Sarawak’s Sukma players are in the national team for 2017 SEA Games. — Bernama
