KUALA LUMPUR: A former religious nursery operator was sentenced to two years’ jail by the High Court here yesterday, when she pleaded guilty to attempting to give support to the IS terrorist group, better known as Daesh.

Judge Datuk Ab Karim Ab Rahman ordered the sentence on Nazhatulshima Sahak, 46, to begin from the date of her arrest Oct 13, 2014. The mother of four was charged with trying to give support to Daesh by purchasing an Istanbul-bound Emirates flight ticket from the KL International Airport (KLIA) to enter Syria for the benefit of the terrorist group.

She committed the offence at Restoran Hakim in Jalan Zikron E7/E, Seksyen 7, Shah Alam on Oct 13, 2014, at 10.50pm under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code.

Upon conviction, Nazhatulshima can be jailed a maximum 15 years or fined or have assets used in the offence confiscated. According to the facts of the case, in 2014, Nazhatulshima started to look up for Daesh after watching YouTube videos of the terrorist group.

She had also told her husband, Amir Azlan Zainudin and the couple’s two sons, Muhammad Iman and Muhammad Ammar, of her intention to move and live in Syria.

On Sept 25, 2014, Nazhatulshima bought an Emirates flight ticket online to travel from KLIA to Dubai on Oct 15, 2014 at 4.30pm, and to board a Dubai-Istanbul flight, as well as an Istanbul-Dubai-KLIA ticket on Oct 30, 2014 at 4.05pm. She paid RM2,843 for the trips.

As part of her preparation to move to Syria, Nazhatulshima had sold her Perodua Myvi car for RM10,000, as well as her Tadika Kelip-Kelip Comel and Taska Kelip-Kelip Comel for RM70,000, in September-end 2014. Later, she was arrested with several other individuals during a meeting at Restoran Hakim Sdn Bhd.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Mohd Nordin Ismail urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to teach Nazhatulshima a lesson and for the setence to serve as a deterrent to others.

Her counsel, Farida Mohammad, said it was her client’s first offence and during her period of detention since Oct 13, 2014, she was very depressed and had repented. On Jan 26, Nazhatulshima’s husband was sentenced to two years’ jail by the High Court here when he pleaded guilty to attempting to give support to Daesh, two years ago. — Bernama
