KOTA KINABALU: A four-year-old girl died yesterday after her mother in a car accidentally ran over her.

The woman also hit a 25-year-old teacher as well as two other young children moments after dropping her daughter off at a kindergarten in Taman Seputeh, Luyang.

The 25-year-old teacher suffered a broken hip and abdominal injuries while a five-year-old boy also suffered hip injuries and a six-year-old girl suffered some trauma.

In the 9.30am incident, the 36-year-old mother of Megan Wong Shi Ting was believed to have stepped on the accelerator pedal without realising that she had not switched the gear into reverse mode.

As Shi Ting was closest to the Ford Focus car, she was run over as it jerked forward, while the teacher who was believed to be trying to shield the other two children was hit with them.

The girl was rushed to the KPJ Hospital where she was pronounced dead at about 10.10am while the other victims were treated for their injuries

at the Queen Elizabeth II hospital.

City Police chief ACP M. Chandra said the accident was due to the driver’s carelessness and that it would be investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 that prohibits reckless and dangerous driving.
