KUCHING: State Democratic Action Party (DAP) launched its election machinery for Kedup and Bukit Semuja constituencies with the support of about 200 party members on Tuesday.

The launch, held at the community hall of Kampung Sangai Empani, was officiated at by state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, who was pleased about the turnout.

“I am very encouraged by the turn-out given that Tuesday was a working day. Not only were they present but their mood was high,” he said in a statement received here yesterday.

Chong, who is also Bandar Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, said he brought up three issues at the function.

In the coming election, he said people could express their disapproval towards the ruling government for the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST), which “has made lives difficult for everyone”.

He added that “we must send a clear message to BN that the people oppose GST”.

Under the BN government, Chong said the people still suffered regardless of whether the global oil price was up or down.

“When the oil price was high, the cronies of the BN government had a windfall and benefitted from the high revenue generated while the people suffered from high inflation. However, when oil price is low, the people also suffer from inflation.”

Chong further alleged that business activities were slowing down and the working class was finding their disposable income shrinking.

As such, he said voters in Sarawak should seize the opportunity to strengthen the opposition and lay the foundation for change of government in the 14th general elections.

With him at the launch were Bukit Gelugor MP Ram Karpal, Stampin MP Julian Tan and Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong.
