KUCHING: Feb 18 is the last day to sign up as volunteers for the coming 18th Malaysia Games (Sukma).

This was announced by Youth and Sports Department (JBS) director Abdul Haris Ishak in a press statement.

Those interested can submit their application online at the games official website at www.sukmasarawak2016.my.

They can also access the online application form through Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/SUKMA2016/.

“The response has been encouraging and so far we received almost 1,600 applicants,” Harris said.

The recruitment drive was launched on Jan 18.

Haris added that all applicants will be screened with the successful ones to be notified via emails and other forms of communication to be confirmed later.

“We will be organising a series of training sessions for those who have been selected sometime in March and the training venue will most probably be held at Youth and Sports Department Sarawak Sports Complex,” he said.

The target is to recruit 3,000 volunteers who will be working hand in hand with the technical, ground management personnel and event assistants comprising of volunteers themselves.

The application for volunteers is open to those aged 18 and above, physically fit and ready for duty at venues of the 24 sports to be contested. Most events will be held in Kuching and Kota Samarahan. Badminton and indoor volleyball will take place in Sibu while karate, sepak takraw and sailing will be held in Miri.

On top of that, 500 volunteers are also needed for the upcoming national Paralympics Games 2016 (Para-Games) in early August.

They will be given special training on how to assist in staging the various events to be participated by athletes of different physical disabilities.
