KUCHING: There were smiles and happiness when February birthday kids at the medical paediatric ward of the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) celebrated their birthdays on Feb 1 as part of an inaugural ‘Sponsor a Cake’ initiative.

Organised for the first time by MBKS Councillor Manjeet Sidhu and her team, the ‘Sponsor a Cake’ initiative will become a monthly affair thereafter.

During the event, the medical paediatric ward also received about 260 books donated by the Librarian Association of Malaysia Sarawak Chapter. The books will be displayed at a reading corner after Chinese New Year.

“This book project is to encourage children to develop a reading habit as well as to provide both children and parents with a meaningful pastime activity while they are at the ward,” said Manjeet.

Besides the ‘Sponsor a Cake’ initiative, another programme held was the granting of the children’s wish list where 28 children from the palliative care centre were given gifts they had wished for.

“Among the items donated were a tablet and a bicycle by fellow councillors of MBKS. We would like to thank all our donors including the donors of the cake and of the gifts that make the children’s wishes come true,” added Manjeet.

Also present during the event was Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah who also celebrated her birthday on the same day and Samariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.

Those who wish to donate books or gift items for the children may contact Manjeet at 014-6926123.
