KUALA SELANGOR: The crisis in Kedah which led to the resignation of Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir as Menteri Besar was an internal state affair, said Barisan Nasional Strategic Communications director Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

He said that Mukhriz was an icon to the younger generation when he became MB but had failed to garner enough support from Kedah Umno leaders.

“We must understand politics is a game of numbers. If you do not have the numbers, then your days are numbered,” said Abdul Rahman, who is Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister.

He said the appointment of Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah showed that people at the centre of power in Kedah – including division, Youth, Wanita and Puteri leaders as well as Umno Supreme Council members and Executive Councillors – felt the need for a new menteri besar.

Abdul Rahman said the crisis had nothing to do with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“This (political crisis in Kedah) has nothing to do with the Prime Minister. I hope those who blame the PM of being the mastermind will cease their accusation,” he said when commenting on the appointment of Ahmad Bashah, the state assemblyman for Bakar Bata, as the new menteri besar.

Abdul Rahman was speaking to reporters after attending a briefing at the Bukit Tagar sanitary landfill in Bestari Jaya near here yesterday.

He said Ahmad Bashah had an important role in helping BN to wrest back Kedah from the opposition in the 2013 general election. — Bernama
