SIBU: Three taekwondo exponents from Rejang Taekwondo Club (RTC) have been picked to join the state squad for the coming Sarawak Sukma to be held in Kuching.

Tie Ton Siong, 19, Tie Sing Da, 17, and Joyce Hii Ian Chin, 20, are currently with the state squad undergoing four months of intensive training in Thailand and Vietnam.

RTC chief coach Thomas Tang said this was the first time in the club’s six-year history that they managed to produce three exponents picked for the state squad.

“We are proud of our achievements and we believe it will go a long way to promote the standard of the sport in the state.”

Ton Siong will compete in the bantamweight, Sing Da in finweight and Joyce in heavyweight category.

Tang said all of them stood a good chance to return with at least a medal.

Ton Siong also took part in the last Sukma and though he did not win any medal, the championship was a good exposure for him to gain the experience and knowledge.

For Sing Da, a student of SMK Chung Cheng and Joyce of Methodist Pilley Institute, it would be their Sukma debut.

Both of them were gold medallists in the 5th edition of the Sarawak Chief Minister Borneo Cup International Taekwondo Championship held in Kuching last year.
