SIBU: A total of 117 families including senior citizens here received gifts from the BN government through the Special Affairs Department in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

Handing over the gifts in the form of a box of mandarin oranges and ang pow at three different locations was Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming. Head of Special Affairs’ Department for Sibu/Mukah Divisions, Awang Julaihi Ali Borhan, was also present.

The hand-outs took place at Chung Ching Kindergarten at Sg Ma’aw for 41 recipients , Ung Nang primary school in Bukit Lan (40 recipients) and at Stabau (36 recipients).

Dato Lau said the Barisan Nasional government is very caring towards the plight and welfare of the less unfortunate.

He said for any festive season including Gawai and Hari Raya, the BN government would reduce the burden of the needy so they can share the joy of celebrations.

In this regard, he urged any needy families to apply for welfare aid through their community leaders. The government wants to identify and help as many needy families as possible in order to create a caring society, Dato Lau said.

He also urged the people not to oppose the government over certain issues.

“That’s not the solution. We should seek the proper channel to air our problems or grievances. We are living in a democratic country where the government practises fair and good governance for all irrespective of races and religion backgrounds,” he stated further.
