BAU: Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) has recommended corporate figure Datuk Henry Harry Jinep as the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate in Tasik Biru.

Its secretary general Anthony Nogeh Gumbek said the party strongly believes that Henry – who was awarded 2015 Excellent Bumiputera Entrepreneur Award – is the most winnable candidate for the seat.

He revealed the party’s previous two potential candidates, lawyer Cilla Nasu and Sarawak Rivers Board controller William Jinep, have both offered to give way.

“Our party has made recommendation to the top leaders that our candidate for Tasik Biru is none other than Datuk Henry Harry Jinep.

“Datuk Henry is a very successful entrepreneur and corporate figure. He is well known to the voters in Tasik Biru since he has done a lot of community service like helping places of worship and associations in Tasik Biru.

“Our party believe Datuk Henry is a very winnable candidate in Tasik Biru,” said Nogeh when met after officiating at a function at Kampung Stenggang near here yesterday.

Meanwhile, Henry in his immediate response thanked the party leadership for having the trust and confidence in him to shoulder this responsibility and task for SPDP and BN.

“Personally, I am ready to carry this responsibility and I pledge my willingness and readiness to serve the rakyat and I am ready to bring back this N2 (Tasik Biru) seat for SPDP and BN.

“With the support of the rakyat and support of party members and also support from other BN components, I believe we can all deliver the win for Barisan Nasional. I must acknowledge the overwhelming support from the

BN components in Tasik Biru namely PBB (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu), SUPP (Sarawak United People’s Party) and PRS (Parti Rakyat Sarawak),” he said.

SPDP has pledged to defend Tasik Biru, one of the eight seats traditionally allocated to the party.

The other BN components in Tasik Biru – PBB, SUPP and PRS – have also expressed full support to the candidate from SPDP in acknowledgement of the party’s right to nominate the BN candidate for the seat.

Henry, 48, is the chief executive officer of Putra Sentosa group of companies. His brother William, earlier introduced as the candidate, was said to have agreed to give way to the younger sibling as he wants to continue serving in the civil service.

“I must also thank my brother William for the support and also the ground work he and his team have prepared all this while. Their good work has gained the confidence and support of the people towards SPDP in Tasik Biru. I pray that they will continue to support me,” said Henry.

Their family are known to be actively involved in community service, notably in contributing to churches particularly in Bau and Lundu districts.

Most recently, St Peter Church was built as a Christmas gift by the family to the Catholics in Kampung Stungkor Lama near Lundu.

Henry had also, on behalf of the Bidayuh Singai community, presented a brand-new Proton Saga FLX SV to the community’s third Catholic priest Fr Robert Jissem in conjunction with his ordination at a dinner on Nov 13.
