MIRI: A 33-year-old man was trapped and burnt to death when the car he was driving rammed onto a telephone pole at Jalan Padang Kerbau here at about 11.45am on Monday.

The victim identified as Voon Chin Siun was said to be coming from the direction of Padang Kerbau towards Jalan Miri-Bypass when he suddenly lost control of the car, a Proton Saga, and rammed onto the telephone pole.

The impact caused the car to land in a ditch before it caught fire.

Passers-by who saw the incident immediately pulled over and tried to help the victim but the flame was too big.

A team of firemen from Lopeng Fire and Rescue station rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 11.46am. The team arrived at the scene at 11.50 and managed to control the fire at 11.53am.

The victim, however, could not be saved. Voon’s charred remains were then taken to Miri Hospital. for further investigation.
