KUCHING: Housing areas should hold gotong-royong projects (communal work-together to clean up the area) periodically to not only keep their area clean, but to prevent dengue fever outbreak.

Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said such activities would also foster better ties among neighbours.

“Maybe hold the gotong-royong once every three or four months to get rid of breeding grounds for mosquitos, no stagnant water, and keep the areas around their homes clean,” he said at the Bandar Baru Semariang Jiran Mesra Pre-Chinese New Year gathering recently.

He said that there was a dengue fever outbreak with nine cases at Kpg Pulo last September, and a mega gotong-royong was held at all housing areas then. Since then, there were no new cases.

Speaking on the gathering, which was held at the Samariang Chinese Community Association chairman Robert Lee’s house, he said it was an opportunity for neighbours from various races to visit and celebrate Chinese New Year.

“I feel proud that this neighbourhood live in peace and harmony, and hope the next generation will continue this way of life.”

Meanwhile, he said that Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Pantai Damai was ready for the upcoming state election.

Its members had gone to the ground to register new eligible voters, and the number of voters had increased by almost 3,000.

“Now the number of voters in my constituency is 17,990, an increase of about 3,000. We aim to register as many as possible. We will also ensure that our members who are eligible to vote will turn out on polling day.”
