KUCHING: An International Conference on Maternal and Child Health (ICMCH) will be held at Kingwood Hotel in Sibu on March 3 and 4.

According to state Health director Datu Dr Zulkifli Jantan, the conference is expected to attract between 800 and 1,000 people including those from outside the country.

“The two-day conference will be an intense discussion on women and children’s health where there will speakers from overseas touching on the subject,” Dr Zulkifli told a press conference yesterday, at Health Department headquarters.

He said 21 distinguished speakers including six from overseas would be presenting the various facets of healthcare for women and children.

Registration fee is RM350 for locals and Dr Zulkifli said the conference is very important for mothers.

He added that the organisers hoped that more nurses, doctors and other allied health professionals as well as parents would attend the conference.

He said so far there were now 500 registered participants for the conference.

According to Dr Zulkifli, the timing of the conference was right as the country had just passed the end of the Millenium Development Goals (MDG), which the country has achieved in relation to women and children health.

“Under the MDG, we have met our goals, but it is not over, so the conference is timely to sustain our goal and set new objectives,” he said.

The conference is organised by Sarawak Midwives Association (SMA), Sibu branch, Segi University, Sarawak Professional Nurses Association, Sibu and Kolej Kejururawatan.
