KUCHING: Thousands of residents from Lawas are expected to take part in the launch of the Sukma Baton Run this Saturday.

The run is being held in conjunction with the on-going promotion of Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) 2016 which starts on July 22.

According to the coordinator of Sukma 2016 secretariat, Affandi Keli, the local population is expected to rally for the event as Lawas is given the honour to kick off the run.

“The last time we hosted the Sukma was in 1990 and now after 26 years it is being held here for the second time and Lawas was chosen to become the starting point for the Baton Run,” Affandi added.

After the launch in Lawas, the run will be held in Limbang and Miri City simultaneously on Feb 14.

Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who is also Sarawak’s chef-de-mission (CDM) for Sukma 2016, is
expected to kick off the run at Miri’s Civic Centre at 7am while Limbang Resident Maria Hasman will do the same in Limbang.

Those interested in participating in the run are advised to contact their respective District Offices and Resident Offices.
