KENINGAU: A man was shot dead while another was injured in a shooting case at two villages here.

In the fatal shooting case, Lido Bayangad, 37, from Kampung Penagatan Ulu here was found death in the forest of Kampung Kisaging Bunsit here last Saturday.

District police chief DSP Douglas Nyeging Taong yesterday said the victim was believed to have gone out hunting alone.

He said that at 12.02pm on February 7, a man came to lodge a police report that he had heard a loud explosion in a forest near his farm about 4pm on February 6. It was followed by the scream of someone moaning in pain.

The complainant rushed to where the moaning was coming from and saw an unidentified man lying in pain, said Douglas.

He said the complainant tried to help but failed and then sought help from his father-in-law and two other people to lift the victim out of the scene but he had died.

Douglas said acting on a tip a police team from the Criminal Investigation Department rushed to the scene and found the victim lying with blood stains.

A green jacket, a backpack, a machete and a homemade gun known as ‘Bakakuk’ were found near the victim, he added.

“There is no sign of struggle at the scene and based on a preliminary examination there were wounds on the right side of the victim’s body.

“A white spent cartridge was also found,” Douglas said, adding that the victim was taken to the Keningau Hospital for further action.

Douglas said according to the victim’s brother, the victim rode on a motorcycle to his farm in Bunsit on February 4.

The brother told police that the homemade gun belonged to the victim, he said.

Douglas said an autopsy was conducted on February 8 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and confirmed that there were nine wounds and eight bullets found in the body of the victim.

The case was classified as sudden death, Douglas said but police would continue to investigate it, and urged anyone with information to come forward to faciliate police investigation.

The police are also investigating the case of a man who was shot in a forest at Kampung Bangau here on Monday.

Douglas said police received a report lodged by a 37-year-old man on February 9.

He said the man stated in his report that he had received calls from a victim asking for help at the main road of Kampung Bangau.

“The victim informed him that he had been shot while setting a trap in the forest. The man then took the victim to the Keningau Hospital for further treatment,” he told a press conference at the district police headquarters here yesterday.

Douglas said initial investigations revealed that the victim, aged 35 from Kampung Tudan Baru here had gone into the area alone about 4pm on February 8 on a motorcycle.

He said the victim was setting up a trap when he heard a gunshot and then felt numb on his left foot. The victim screamed for help but no help came.

The victim then fainted and woke up about 5am on February 9. He then crawled for an hour to get to the roadside to contact his friend.

“Treatment of the victim at the hospital found five wounds on the buttocks and thighs, and according to the doctor who treated the victim, the bullets only hit the muscle and not the bone.

“The victim was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Two in Kota Kinabalu to undergo surgery to remove the bullets in his body.

“Initial investigations found that there were no witnesses who saw the incident or were at the scene,” he said.

Douglas added the case was being investigated under Section 37 of the Firearms Act 1960 for causing injury with a weapon without a valid reason, and carries a jail sentence of two years and a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or both.
