LAHAD DATU: One person was killed and five others were injured in an accident at Km 26 off Jalan Lahad Datu-Tawau yesterday.

The 10.30am incident involved a Perodua Alza, a Toyota Vigo and a Honda City.

District police chief ACP Hamzah Ahmad said the deceased had been identified as the Perodua Alza’s driver, Mohammad Nazri Bin Madin, 26.

He said the five other victims were the driver and the passengers of the Toyota Vigo, while the driver of the Honda City car escaped unhurt.

“Initial investigation found that the Perodua Alza was heading to Lahad Datu from Tawau while the Honda City and Toyota Vigo were coming in the opposite direction.

“Investigation also found that the Perodua Alza made a sudden stop upon seeing the Honda City overtaking the Toyota Vigo. The driver of the Perodua Alza later lost control of his steering and hit the Honda City before colliding with the Toyota Vigo,” he said.

The impact of the crash trapped the Perodua Alza driver inside his vehicle, and was killed on the spot, while the driver and passengers of the Toyota Vigo were injured.

Hamzah added that the case would be investigated under Section 41(1)(A) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, district Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohd Apandi Mahmood said his department was alerted of the accident at 10.36am.

Apandi said eight fire and rescue personnel rushed to the scene in a fire engine and arrived at 11am.

“We took about ten minutes to free a man inside a Perodua Alza and the victim was handed to the police for further action,” he said.
