SIBU: A fund to the tune of nearly RM1.4 million for kidney patients and diabetics was raised at Sibu United Chinese Association’s (UCA) New Year gathering here on Thursday night (Feb 11) from four evergreen hits sung by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

Accompanied by a live band, Adenan first crooned ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’ made popular by the late Elvis Presley, followed by rock ‘n’ roll tunes  ‘The Young Ones’ and ‘Travelling Light’ – both popular oldies from Sir Cliff Richard.

The Chief Minister received a standing ovation from the 2,000 strong crowd attending the gathering as he wrapped up with a P. Ramlee number titled  ‘Putus Sudah Kasih Sayang’.

Second Finance Minister and Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh read out the list of the 21 generous donors who chipped in to hear Adenan sing.

“I know normally, he (Adenan) only sings one or two songs and three at most. But tonight, he has sung four songs and in appreciation of what our CM has done for us in the past two years, the people of Sibu responded readily to the fund raising,” Wong said.

He revealed that the total sum raised as a result of the songs sung by Adenan was RM1,388,888.

Earlier, Adenan told those present that he wanted to sing for those with kidney problems and diabetics.
