The duo, who were attached to the Beluran police station, were involved in the accident after their vehicle skidded on the road before hitting the safety barrier around 2.30am.

Sandakan police chief ACP Zabidi Mohd Zain said initial investigations revealed the crash occurred when the four-wheel drive skidded and hit the road divider.

He said the road was a straight stretch but visibility was poor as there was no streetlight.

In the second incident that happened around 1.30pm on Wednesday at Km 33, Sandakan-Lahad Datu bypass, the estate manager succumbed to his injuries after his Toyota Land Cruiser was hit by an express bus.

Rusnah Marikan succumbed to severe head and body injuries in the 5.30am incident.

It is believed that the victim was on her way home to Kampung Baru Luyang when the Proton Wira car, driven by a 22-year-old man that was heading to Luyang from Beverly Hills, crashed into the elderly woman while crossing the road.

The victim was thrown a couple of meters from the scene and died instantly.

“Police have detained the driver to assist investigation,” he said.

Rosley urged eyewitnesses to assist police to investigate the case under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
