GEORGE TOWN: A gunman shot dead a ‘nasi kandar’ restaurant owner in Jalan Datuk Keramat here yesterday, said police.
The assailant fired six shots at Syed Amen Jainul Abdin (rpt) Jainul Abdin, five of which hit him in the head, body and hands in the 3.30am incident, said Penang CID chief Datuk Mohd Zakaria Ahmad.
He said the gunman and another man on a motorcycle had tailed the car driven by Syed Amen as he was travelling towards Komtar.
When Syed Amen, who also owns a car wash facility, stopped the car in front of a high-powered motorcycle shop, the gunman who was riding pillion walked up to the driver’s window and opened fire, he said.
The gunman also fired some shots at two People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) personnel on guard duty at the shop but the bullets missed them, Mohd Zakaria told reporters at the scene.
It all happened in a matter of two minutes and the assailants sped off on the motorcycle, he said.
Mohd Zakaria said police were trying to determine the motive for the killing and were scrutinising recordings of CCTV cameras along the road and at the spot to identify the assailants.
He said Syed Amen’s body was sent to the Penang Hospital.
Mohd Zakaria appealed to eye-witnesses and people with information on the murder to come forward to assist the police in the investigation.
The two Rela personnel said they only realised what had happened after hearing the gunshots.
“The car driven by the victim stopped in front of the shop and a motorcycle pulled up behind it.
“We thought nothing about it but one of the motorcyclists
opened fire into the car,” said one of them who declined to be identified.
“When the gunman spotted us, he fired at us but missed,” he added. — Bernama
