JULAU: The plight of the Chinese community in Nanga Nyelong, about 20 minutes longboat ride from here, has caught the attention of one of the aspiring candidates from Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) for Meluan seat in the coming state election.

Rolland Duat who hopes to be picked by the top Barisan Nasional (BN) leadership to win back Meluan seat said he was shocked to find out that the area was not accessible by road and the residents were yet to enjoy basic amenities such as treated water and electricity supplies.

Most appalling was that the residents claimed they had been neglected although they had given their votes to BN candidates in every past election, he said.

“During my visit to the area on the second day of Chinese New Year, I found out that the residents were still relying on generator set for power source; Kanowit River as source of water supply; and boats as mode of transportation,” he lamented.

As Julau had been represented by BN for quite a long time, basic needs of the people such as water, electricity and access
road should have been addressed by now, he added.

Rolland promised to look into their problems and find ways and means to address them, if given the opportunity to represent them.

“I appeal for your solid support to be endorsed by the top BN leadership to contest in Meluan and most of all to win the seat for the benefit of the people in the constituency,” Rolland added.
