BINTULU: Firefighters from the Bintulu fire station rescued a Vietnamese woman from the awning of a building at Bintulu Sentral yesterday.

It is believed that she may have been contemplating suicide.

Firefighters received a report at 8.36am that the 26-year-old, identified as Tran Thi Kim Yen, was sitting by herself on the awning.

They found her crying and claiming that someone was trying to kill her.

In less than 10 minutes, the firefighters led by Hashim Norshidi managed to coax the woman to get down.

She was then brought to the police station.

Bintulu police chief Supt Zailanni Amit confirmed the case and said further investigation on the woman’s employer found that she had worked in an entertainment outlet in the area since last April.

However, she went missing in August and her employer had no idea of her whereabouts until she returned and started work again in October.

He said the Vietnamese woman had tried to jump off from the awning on the first floor of the building.

The entertainment outlet houses its workers on the second floor.

“During the interrogation, the woman said she was not trying to commit suicide but she was afraid of her male friend also a Vietnamese, Tran Van Van, who (she claimed) was trying to kill her,” said Zailanni.

The woman told police she had no problem with her employer as she was paid RM2,000 every month.

“The woman is now being detained at the Bintulu Central police station. She appears to be mentally unstable and was talking to herself.

“The case is investigated under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide,” added Zailanni.
