JOHOR BAHARU: Two local men who were wanted by the Johor Baharu Selatan (JBS) police concerning drugs and robbery cases, were arrested near the Pasir Gudang Highway here, early yesterday.

JBS police chief ACP Sulaiman Salleh said the two suspects, aged 22 and 29, were friends of two other individuals, who had
earlier broken-into an electronics store in Taman Setia Indah, here.

However, he said the two individuals managed to escape using a Proton Waja car after being pursued by a police patrol unit.

“At 4.15 am, the police received a call from the public saying there was a shop in Taman Setia Indah which was broken-into,” he said, adding that the police deployed 13 personnel in an operation, and sent two patrol cars to the scene of the crime.

“However, on the way there, they (patrol team) came across a Proton Waja which looked suspicious, and tried to stop it.”

However, the vehicle carrying the two suspects refused to cooperate with the police and sped on, thus beginning a two-hour chase.

“After reaching a certain area, along came a Honda City car with two men. They tried to stop the police vehicle from continuing to pursue their friends’ vehicle (Proton Waja), and unfortunately, an accident occurred causing injury to two of our patrol members, but they still managed to arrest the two suspects in the Honda City, while the suspects in the Proton Waja fled the scene,” he said.

Sulaiman said inspections revealed that the Honda City car was stolen during the incident, and a number of electronic
items including a home theater set was found in the back of the vehicle.

Police believe the suspects took advantage of the Chinese New Year holiday period by breaking into shops that were temporarily closed.

The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants from discharging their duties. — Bernama
