State Disaster Committee Operations Room personnel show their thumbs-up to mark the end of flood monitoring for Kuching zone.

KUCHING: The flood monitoring for Kuching zone has been closed, in view of better weather and improving conditions over the past couple of days.

The secretariat for the state Disaster Committee Operations Room said the monitoring for Kuching zone ended at 11.40am yesterday, which was also confirmed by Fire and Rescue Department state director Nor Hisham Mohamad.

On this, state Civil Defence Department (JPAM) public relations officer Siti Huzaimah Ibrahim thanked all participating agencies for providing the department with the necessary assets, food, drinks and basic amenities to help flood victims.

“We also want to thank all the volunteers for their tremendous assistance,” she said.

However, Kuchingites should still be cautious, said Siti Huzaimah, especially with the rising of the ‘King Tide’ of up to 5.6m today.

According to data on Malaysian Meteorological Department official website, the next round of ‘King Tide’ will hit the state on Feb 20-27, with rising levels ranging between 5.5m and 5.9m.

“Sarawak can expect isolated rains in the morning and also at night, and also isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon until Sunday,” it said.

Those living in low-lying areas in Kuching, Samarahan and Sri Aman divisions have been told to brace for flash flooding on Feb 16 and 17 as heavy rains are expected over these two days.

Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah recently stated that Sarawak would receive higher rainfall this month compared to March, with the maximum precipitation at 800mm across these three divisions.
