MIRI: Hosts Sarawak is targeting at least 72 gold medals in the 18th Sukma to be held from July 22-31 this year.

Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin is rallying all Sarawakians to support our state athletes.

He made the call at the launch of Sukma Sarawak Baton Run at Miri Civic Centre yesterday. The run is part of efforts to promote the upcoming Sukma throughout the state.

“We hope everyone can work together and give their full support to our athletes, especially parents with children representing Sarawak in the game, to boost their confidence and determination,” he said.

Lee, who will also be head of the state contingent for Sukma, said Miri will be hosting three sports – sepak takraw, yatching and karate – during the games in July.

“Holding on to the policy ‘Agi Hidup Agi Ngelaban’, we hope all our state Sukma athletes will have strong determination to realise Sarawak’s dream of becoming Sukma 2016 champion,” he added.

Also present at yesterday’s ceremony were Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis, Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai and SUPP Piasau chairman Datuk Sebastian Ting.

The event at Miri Civic Centre attracted a crowd of more than 500.

About 200 secondary school students and members of the public participated in the run led by ex-national sprinter Watson Nyambek.

Sukma Sarawak mascots Satria and Satrina were present to further enliven the atmosphere.
