SIBU: It is very important that new areas are opened up to accommodate the increasing population.

Describing it as a proactive and long term measure, Minister of Housing Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said this not only will ensure provision of basic amenities in a more orderly and organised manner but also it can improve people’s living standard.

“Through meticulous planning we can encourage the people involved to build better houses and according to standards set by local authorities,” he said at the launching of Kemuyang development project here yesterday.

His text of speech was read by Assistant Housing Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem was guest-of-honour at the function.

Abang Johari said the Kemuyang development project was to accommodate extended families from Kampung Datu/Kampung Hilir and those who still did not have houses to address congestion in their existing homes.

“If the issue is not resolved promptly and systematically, it can cause social problems in the future.

“When a residential area is too crowded, it is not conducive for living because it can increase the risk of fire and health problems,” he said.

He said the new area in Kemuyang when fully completed will be a modern village that is conducive and safe for living.

He believed it can be transformed into a new mini town similar to Sibu Jaya.

The development of the project will be done in two phases, whereby a total of 812 lots covering 812 acres will be allocated to selected recipients from Kampung Datu/Kampung Hilir.

Each lot has between 10 and 12 points.

Dr Annuar who spoke earlier said the project would enable the villagers to build comfortable homes.

On another matter, he called on Nangka constituents to give their support to Adenan in the coming state election.

Adenan‘s wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Jamilah Anu, Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and his wife Datin Sri Pauline Leong, Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee and Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) general manager Datu Dr Sulaiman Husaini were present.
