SIBU: The police’s Bomb Disposal Unit has disposed of a suspicious object believed to be a bomb that was planted near midnight here today (Feb 23) outside a pub at Keranji Road.

Sibu police chief ACP Mohd Kamal Kordi confirmed the incident, saying that their Bomb Disposal Unit was now investigating the remains of the object to determine whether or not it was a bomb.

The object was placed under a car outside the pub which its owner found at approximately 11pm.

The car owner subsequently removed it and placed it under a nearby tree before calling the police.

The Bomb Disposal Unit then proceeded to dispose of it via remote detonation.

A member of the public who saw the team in action said that the object was powerful enough to “blow up a car”.

After the police were informed of the incident, high ranking officers including Sibu Deputy Chief Supt Martin Koo and Sibu CID head DSP Yeoh Chun Shyan rushed over with the Bomb Dosposal Unit, CID personnel and others.

“We cannot confirm whether or not it is a bomb yet. We are studying its contents now. Our Bomb Disposal Unit responded promptly to the incident,” Mohd Kamal told The Borneo Post.

A team from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) was also dispatched to the scene.

Police cordon off the road leading to the area where the device was found. The pub is located at the corner lot of the block on the right.

The object was planted outside a pub that had caused a row on Dec 27 last year sparked by an unsettled beer bill of RM230.

The incident led to an assault when a father and his two sons stormed into the house of the customer shortly after the row in the pub.

The police have not confirmed the motive of the incident on Chap Goh Meh or whether or not it shares links to gangsterism.
