Four detained in ‘Operasi Gempur 21/2016’

SUNGAI AKAR, BRUNEI-MUARA: Four foreigners were found to have allegedly violated the country’s labour’s law in the latest operation codenamed ‘Operasi Gempur 21/2016’ carried out by the Labour Enforcement Division of the Labour Department in a house that manufactures ‘cendol’ in Sungai Akar.

The operation which took place on Saturday morning involved 10 Labour Enforcement officers.

One of the foreigners caught was holding an employment permit to work as a domestic helper while another person was holding the position of a personal driver.

Another suspect was found to be holding the employment permit as a labourer in a construction site and the remaining foreigner was holding a visitor’s pass. For the offences, the Labour Department will take action to terminate or reduce the quota on the taking and employment of foreign workers by employers, while the foreign workers who were found guilty will be deported back to their respective country after their working pass is terminated.

The Labour Department also reminded employers and the public not to misuse their foreign workers’ employment permit.

For employing and waging a foreign worker without a permit from the Commissioner of Labour, offenders can be charged under Chapter 112 (1) of the Employment Order 2009 and if found guilty will, be charged under Chapter 112 (3) of a similar order, which is a fine of not less than BND$6,000 and not more than BND$10,000, or imprisonment of not less than six months and not more than three years, or both.
