KUCHING: The state’s three evacuation centres — all in Serian Division — have been open, following heavy rains that caused floods and landslides there.

The one at Kampung Koran hall has been running since Saturday, providing shelter to 10 people from two families affected by that landslide hit their houses; while the centre at Kampung Slabi Entungkuh hall was re-opened yesterday, housing 40 people from nine families affected by the flood since 1.30pm yesterday.

The evacuation centre at Kampung Tebakang Bidayuh was also re-opened after many houses there were inundated on Saturday night. As at 4pm yesterday, 57 people from 15 affected families took shelter at the centre, located in the village’s Sacred Heart Church.

“Overall, there are 107 victims from 26 affected families placed at the three evacuation centres that are still open in Serian Division as at 4pm (yesterday),” said state Civil Defence Department (JPAM) public relations officer Siti Huzaimah Ibrahim.

The Gedong community hall, also in Serian Division, has been closed after having provided shelter to flood victims since Monday. Meanwhile, heavy rains in the state capital yesterday morning did not lead to the repeat of the flash floods that hit many parts across the city on Saturday.

The weather turned hot and sunny a few hours after the downpour, and continued to be fine till evening.
