TAWAU: People in Tawau will have the opportunity to take part in the World Speech Day (WSD) on March 15, a global event to be held simultaneously all over the world on that day.
The World Speech Day to be held at Charis International School Auditorium, Level 2, from 7pm to 9.30pm is also the first such event in Malaysia to be initiated by the school’s Gavel Club.
The Charis International School Gavel Club was chartered in 2014 by Distinguished Toastmaster Lee Chye Ewe, a well known multi-lingua speaker, motivator and master of ceremonies. A Gavel Club is similar to that of a Toastmasters Club but is meant for members under the age of 18.
The inaugural event has received strong support from Tawau member of parliament, who is also the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching.
Datuk Mary was full of praise for the event as it encourages members of the public to take the courage to speak for a good cause.
A special ceremony was also held to present contribution to the Charis International School Gavel Club for organizing the event.
Lee said the World Speech Day was a day dedicated to celebrating speeches and speech making through a multitude of live speaking events across the globe.
These will happen in schools and colleges, in community halls and university chambers, in offices, parliaments, museums and parks – even cafes.
Each WSD event requires a host, who invites speakers, and an audience.
The speeches should be short and should involve ideas that can help other people, in ways large or small.
The founder of the World Speech Day is Simon Gibson from the United Kingdom.
He said the response to the event was overwhelming even though it was first announced on Facebook.
Many speakers, both young and adults have signed up to speak. Many more have pledged to support the event.
Each speaker is given three to five minutes to speak on any topic within the theme, For a Better World. The speakers may choose to speak in either English, Bahasa Melayu or Mandarin. A beautifully designed certificate will be presented to each speaker.
The event is open to the public and entrance is free.
