More seeds fall on Day 3 of CM Cup

KUCHING: More seeded players fell by the wayside on the third day of the 27th Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup (I) ITF Junior Tennis Championship (Grade 1) at the SLTA tennis centre yesterday.

Alexis Canter of Great Britain, ITF No. 52 player, became the top seed casualty in the boys’ singles when he lost to 15th seed Lyu Chengtze of China 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Lyu, ranked ITF No. 151, will face his compatriot fifth seeded Wang Chukang in the quarterfinals after the latter dismissed ninth seed Naoki Tajima of Japan 6-4, 6-1.

Two other Chinese players who also advanced to the last eight were top seed Wu Yibing who brushed aside Yu Hua-Chen (Chinese Taipei) 6-3, 6-0 and fourth seed Zhao Lingxi who defeated James Kent Trotter (Jpn) 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Wu will play eighth seed Mikhail Sokolovsky (Russia) who was a 7-6(4), 6-4 winner over Finn Bass of Great Britain.

The other two slots for the quarterfinals were grabbed by second seed Khumoun Sultanov who Anthony Jackie Tang (HK) 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 and Alastair Gray (GB) who outplayed Liu Yi Zhou (Ch) 6-4, 6-4.

Zhao’s next opponent is sixth seed Lo Chien Hsun after the Chinese Taipei player ousted Moerani Bouzige 7-6(6), 6-4.

In the girls’ singles, ITF No. 295 Czech Republic’s Karolina Berankova marched on after breezing past Cho Yi Tsen (C Taipei) 6-2, 6-2 as three other seeds made their exit.

Yuki Naito (Jpn) who is ITF No. 30 became the top casualty losing 6-2, 2-6, 2-6 to unseeded Du Zhima (Ch – ITF No. 163) and fifth seed Ren Jia Qi was bundled out of the third round by wild card entry Cho I-Hsuan (C Taipei) 6-4, 6-1.

Other upsets included 10th seed Ma Shuyue (Ch) who beat seventh seed Zeel Desai of India 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-4 and ninth seed Michaela Haet (Aust) who triumphed 6-3, 6-2 over eighth seed Haruna Arakawa (Jpn).

Top seed Charlotte Robillard-Millette (Can) breezed into the last eight with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Lee Yang (C Taipei). Charlotte next plays Japanese stayer Mayuka Aikawa who posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Chen Pei Hsuan (C Taipei).

Chinese Taipei’s Liang En Shuo won the last ticket when she upset 13th seed Mihika Yadav (India) 6-3, 6-4.

In the boys’ doubles, China’s Mo Ye Cong and Wu Yibing upstaged second seeds Finn Bass-Alastair Gray (GB) 6-1, 4-6, (10-8) to play fourth seeded Lyu Chengtze-Zhao Lingxi in an all-China semi-final while the other semi-final is between top seeds Alexis Canter (GB) and partner Mikhail Sokolovsky (Russia) versus sixth seeds Anthony Jackie Tang and Jack Wong (both HK).

The girls’ doubles matches were disrupted by rain at 3.38pm and 5pm.
