KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) has urged the government to come up with an effective detection mechanism to identify terrorist supporters and sympathisers among Malaysians.

Its vice-chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said this action must be taken as a step to safeguard Malaysia from terrorist threats.

“Our police and security forces should be on high alert at all times and beef up their intelligence gathering to ensure pre-emptive action can be taken.

“The fact that among those detained recently and previously were police and armed forces personnel and even students is indeed a matter of serious concern,” he said in a statement, here, yesterday.

Lee said the public also should take the matter seriously and cooperate with the authorities since terrorism could happen anytime and anywhere.

“The public should remain vigilant, be aware and concious of any suspicious behaviour, characters or activities and provide information to the police.”

He said social media monitoring was also necessary since police investigation revealed that about 95 per cent of the Malaysians who joined the Daesh terrorist group were recruited through the medium. — Bernama
