KUCHING: Two upperfloor units of a two-storey flat complex at Taman Sri Malihah in Matang were razed while four others were damaged when a fire broke out on Friday night.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received a distress call at 9.55pm and despatched personnel from its Petra Jaya, Tabuan Jaya and BatuLintang fire stations to tackle the situation.

Bomba personnel, led by deputy director of operations Farhan Sufyan Borhan and Kuching Zone chief Tiong Ling Hii, arrived to discover the fire had spread to three units on the upper floor and immediately went about controlling the situation from worsening.

The flames were brought under control at 10.50pm before being extinguished 16 minutes later, with two of the three upper-floor units completely gutted.

Two other units suffered an estimated 30 per cent damage on the ceiling and roof, while another two units suffered only minor damage.

Checks later revealed that only the two least-affected units had families staying there while the other four were uninhabited.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
