KUCHING: Sarawak’s paddlers put up an excellent performance at the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Table Tennis Championships in Kelantan from March 13-17 by capturing three gold, five silver and seven bronze medals to finish second overall.

The overall champions were Selangor who captured five gold medals while Kuala Lumpur came in third with two gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

National paddler Alice Chang Li Sian lived up to expectations to deliver a gold for Sarawak after beating teammate Crystal Tiong Hui Man 4-1 (9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-6, 13-11) in the girls U18 final.

Karen Lyne Dick made it a 1-2-3 finish for Sarawak after she beat Tey Ka Ying of Johor in the placing play-off.

Alice Chang claimed her second gold in the Girls U18 team event and a silver in the Girls U18 doubles with Karen after they lost to another Sarawak pair Crystal Tiong and Sia Hsiao Ching in the final.

Meanwhile, the state’s other silver medals were delivered by Benjamin Thian Khang Chern (Boys U12), Sia Hsiao Ling (Girls U12 singles) and Boys U12 team while the other bronze medals were contributed by Gabriel Ling Kerk Yu (Boys U18 singles), Foo Sze Hui-Chang Choy Xuan (Girls U12 doubles), Gabriel Ling-Derrick Tsai Chang Fong and Christopher Goh Kho Hian Hui-Tan Shi Han (Boys U18 doubles), Girls U12 team and Boys U12 team.

Several Sarawak paddlers also finished as the top eight ranked players in the boys and girls categories. Alice Chang was ranked top in the Girls U18 while Crystal Tiong was second and Karen was fourth.

In the Boys U18, Gabriel Ling was ranked number four and Derrick Tsai number six.
