SIBU: The charitable spirit of the late Brother Albinus Michael O’Flaherty lives on in the Class of 1985 (Form 5) of Sacred Heart Secondary School as the boys move beyond reunion.

Former head prefect Hii Chang Kee told thesundaypost that the social obligations they intended to carry out included contributing to their alma mater, giving career talks and assisting needy students.

“I believe this is achievable if we work as a team and unite in our hearts. The sacrifice and contributions of the late Bro Albinus make us what we are today.

“This spirit lives on in us. So, I hope we come together not only for reunion but to do some meaningful social obligations,” said Hii who is Sibu Resident.

The reunion on Friday night attracted more than 140 former students and spouses after the inaugural one held last year.

The spirit of brotherhood among them was unshakeable as some had travelled from as far as United Kingdom, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei and the Peninsula.

Dressed in the traditional red T-shirt with the words ‘Brothers In Arms’ to signify the bond among them, they shook hands and hugged one another.

Hii said about 15 former students turned up for the first time after missing the inaugural reunion last year.

There were 20 teachers.

Word of mouth, WhatsApp and FaceBook were mobilised to gather former students from various corners of the world.

With the achievement, Hii looked forward to a bigger number at next year’s reunion scheduled for March 31, 2017.

He reckoned they could gather about 350 people from nine classes.

“We hope more of Class of ’85 will join us, including former teachers.”

He assured of more mini reunions to come.

“As many of us will be reaching 50 next year, we hope they will bring their wives and families for this grand do,” Hii said.

Earlier, deputy chief editor of The Sabah Times, Jerry Kamijan, composed a touching poem in honour of Bro Albinus which he recited to the boys: “He came with nothing but the zeal to educate us. He left with something: thousands of us, leading a fine life. In between, he gave everything: Teaching us true grit, not glitter.”

The reunion began with a school rally and a moment of silence was observed for the late Bro Albinus and former classmates who had passed on.
