SIBU: Networking and understanding are vital components needed to achieve the vision of the state civil service towards becoming a ‘World Class Civil Service’.

Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee said civil servants now should no longer work in silos.

”Silos happen when certain departments or individuals do not wish to share information with others in the same service. This type of mentality will reduce efficiency in the overall operation, reduce morale, and may contribute to the demise of a productive work culture,” he said.

Hii added that the state civil service under the leadership of State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohammad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, had introduced and implemented many initiatives to encourage sharing among members of the state civil service, such as the ‘High Performance Team’, ‘Innovative and Creative Circles’ and ‘Key Focus Activities’.

Hii was speaking at the closing of the state-Level Malaysia Government Servants Welfare and Sports Council (Maksak) tennis competition held at Bukit Lima Tennis Court here recently.

“The Maksak game is undoubtedly another informal platform for civil servants from different divisions to share their experience and work culture. Like in any other sport events, there are bound to be winners and losers.

“I would like to congratulate the winners for your excellent and entertaining performance.

“The losers should not be disheartened as the ultimate aim of the game is not to win, but to learn from our mistakes, sharpen our skills and at the same time, meet new friends from various divisions. Let us uphold the good sportsmanship and treasure the friendship and experience gained from this tournament,” Hii said.

Kuching Maksak emerged champion, followed by Sibu, Limbang and Mukah teams as runners-up in the two-day outing, organised by Sibu Division Maksak and was participated by all divisions across the state, except Serian.

Selected players from this competition would represent the state Maksak at the national-level tournament to be held in Melaka from April 14 to 17.
