ALOR SETAR: Students taking the Degree in Law (Honours) (LLB) in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) now no longer need to go through a training programme as the course has been recognised by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board of Malaysia (LPQB).

UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said the LPQB had agreed on the exemption after studying the UUM report on the measures taken by the university to comply by its conditions.

“I am happy and thankful for this decision as UUM had taken all the steps to fulfil the requirements for the recognition since 2011, resulting in the recognition by the professional body,” he said in a statement from UUM yesterday.

Previously, the LPQB had stipulated that students needed to undergo three training courses for the programme – the Training Programme on Conveyancing Practice, Drafting Pleadings, and Opinion Writing – organised by the Malaysian Bar Council before getting their Certificate of Completion.

He said, in connection to this, the School of law needed to improve the quality of its graduates so that UUM’s law programmes became the best in Malaysia. — Bernama
