KUCHING: SMK Penrissen No. 1 made a successful defence of their Under-18 crown at the Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Kuching Girls’ Hockey Championship at SMK Paku, Bau, on Tuesday when they edged SMK Bako 2-1 on a penalty shoot-out (full time: 1-1).

SMK Bau came third after they beat SMK Agama Matang 2-0 in the play-off.

SMK Bau prevented a clean sweep of the girls’ titles by SMK Penrissen No. 1 as they defeated the latter 1-0 also on a penalty shoot-out (full time: 0-0). In third place were SMK Sri Matang who defeated SMK Paku 1-0 in the play-off.

Meanwhile, SMK Penrissen No. 1 are also doing well in the on-going Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Kuching Boys’ U18 and U15 Hockey Championship at the Sarawak Astroturf Hockey Stadium yesterday.

They advanced to the semi-finals after thumping SMK Matang Hilir 8-0 in yesterday’s quarterfinals and will face SMK Paku after the defending champions blanked SMK Lake 3-0 in the other quarterfinal.

Meeting in today’s other semi-final are SM St Thomas (edged SMK Bau 1-0) and SMK Green Road (beat SMK Sains Kuching Utara 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out after full-time 0-0).

In the Boys’ U15 competition, SMK Penrissen No. 1 also booked a place in the second round in Group Y and they have SMK Green Road and SMK Matang Hilir for company. In Group X are SMK Bako, SMK Agama Matang and SMK Paku.

Twelve teams are competing in the Boys’ U18 category while there are 11 teams in the Boys’ U15 competition.

The championship is hosted by SMK Penrissen No. 1.
