With eight of the 16 new records created so far in throwing events, three throwers stamped their authority on the third day of the Sarawak Inter-Division Schools Track and Field Championships at the Unimas Stadium yesterday.

Sibu’s Johnny Ling hurled the hammer to 60.81 metres to break the Boys’ Under-18 record of 57.63m set by Jackson Wong of Sarikei in 2014.

In the Boys’ U-14 shot put, Zeronnie Felipe Thomas of Miri registered a distance of 15.82m which bettered the old mark of 14.25m established by Sarikei’s Eric Tiong in 2013.

Wong Yu Kiong restored some pride for Sarikei, the traditional powerhouse for throwing events, by shattering the Boys’ U-12 shot put record. His winning distance of 14.25m surpassed the previous standard of 13.91m recorded by Miri’s Eric Tiong in 2013.

Today is the final day of competition. Much of the action will be on the track.

Kuching’s Asly Chua (Boys’ U-18) and Miri’s Royhannes Jehffery (Boys’ U-14) will be aiming for a double in the 200m finals, having won their respective 100m finals on the first day of competition in 10.7 and 11.2sec. The 4x100m and 4x400m relays will bring the four-day championship to an end. — by Eikman Teo
