SIBU: The United People’s Party (UPP) is likely to be allocated more seats in the next state election.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who is state Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, indicated that UPP candidates would get more seats.

On Tuesday, Adenan had announced that Bengoh assemblyman and UPP deputy president Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, would be a direct BN candidate for Mambong.

“There will be several more seats for UPP, which will be announced in due time,” he told a press conference after meeting KTS Group staff yesterday.

“One is good but it is not enough. The time will come when I announce it … I don’t think anybody will be happy with just one seat.”

On whether UPP president and Bawang Assan incumbent Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh would be on Team Adenan, the chief minister said he could not be too particular at this time.

He added that the candidates for Dudong, Bawang Assan and Meradong would be announced before nomination day.

Meanwhile, on how he gauged the strength of potential candidates, Adenan said it was based on assessment, response from the people and the people’s general attitude.

“Potential candidates are fighting for the use of the ‘dacing’ (scale) symbol, which goes to show how popular that symbol is. Very seldom do I hear of people fighting for the opposition’s symbol,” he said.

Adenan also noted the presence of some 8,000 people at the event.

“I am touched by the overwhelming response by the people wherever I go.”
