BINTULU: The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) will be monitoring construction sites in the state more frequently.

This is to ensure such sites are free of employees who do not have green cards, especially unregistered foreigners, are not in violation, and are not Aedes breeding spots.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof cautioned that if contractors involved in government projects were caught flouting the law, their contracts might be terminated.

“It is my hope that contractors will maintain a high standard of professionalism for the well-being, safety and harmony for all,” he said at the official opening of CIDB Bintulu Branch office at Phase 7, Parkcity Commercial Centre, yesterday.

Also present were Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip, CIDB Malaysia chief executive officer Dato Ahmad Asri Abdul Hamid, Works Ministry secretary general Dato Sri Zohari Akob, Malaysian Malay Association president Dato Mokhtar Samad, and Bintulu Resident Muhamad Yakup Kari.

Fadillah said CIDB was important not only as a regulator in the construction sector but also to ensure that the manpower could be trained to be efficient.

He added that the research and development to improve the construction sector and new materials would be given more focus as this sector was viable and competitive.

“CIDB also plays a role as our industry liaison at the international level. Currently, the Indian government hopes we can invest and play a role in the development of infrastructure and facilities in India.”

He said Zohari was the liaison person between Malaysian and India, which had agreed that our players be involved in the construction of the Convention Centre in India.

“This means that Malaysia is recognised in the construction industry internationally.”
