KOTA KINABALU: Two police officers were injured when a 23-year-old drug suspect resisted arrest and put up a fight with them.
In the 9.40pm incident on Saturday, three motorcycle patrol unit police officers from the Kota Kinabalu unit were on duty from Jalan Sepanggar heading towards the Indah Permai traffic light junction, when they encountered a motorcyclist behaving in a suspicious manner on a white Modenas Dinamik 120 motorcycle, who refused to stop when ordered to do so.
City police chief ACP M. Chandra said yesterday that the suspect ignored the police officers’ order and sped off towards the Taman Kuala Menggatal junction, going against the traffic flow into Jalan Sulaman leading to the nearby Fire and Rescue Department quarters. The suspect’s motorcycle eventually skidded and he made an attempt to escape.
“When the police officers tried to arrest him, he fought back and made it difficult for the police to handcuff him. He acted in an aggressive manner and a struggle ensued between the suspect and the officers,” said Chandra.
In the midst of the struggle, the suspect took out something from his sling bag and tossed away a packet of clear substance that is believed to be syabu.
The suspect sustained injuries to both his wrists when he was finally subdued by the police with the help of the public. One of the police officers sprained his right wrist while another sustained a bruised knee in the tussle with the suspect.
The suspect had also uttered harsh words to the police saying, “Polis bodoh (stupid police)” and spat on the officers which unfortunately landed on a member of the public who had helped police with the arrest.
Some 0.15 gramme of syabu was found on the suspect and it was confiscated by the police.
The case is being investigated under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
