KUCHING: Sarawak will be making a fierce challenge at this year’s national-level Civil Service Recreational and Welfare Club (Maksak) games carnival to be held in Melaka from April 13-17.

Team leader Khairul Nizam Morshidi appears unfazed by his athletes having to go head-to-head against current or former national athletes from other state contingents.

“All our athletes are prepared physically. We have done a thorough selection process where only the best of the best are selected for the games,” he told The Borneo Post after receiving the state colours from state secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Morshidi Abdul Ghani at Wisma Bapa Malaysia yesterday.

The 81 state athletes have been selected through a series of divisional Maksak events to compete in table tennis, tennis, futsal (men and women) and athletics.

Teams expected to pose the biggest threat to Sarawak’s gold medal hunt are Perak and Malaysian Armed Forces.

“However, we will not go down without a fight,” Khairul promised.
