SIBU: Old horse Danny Wong has stayed on course as he edged Joe Ting 3-1 (58-34, 58-30, 40-82, 58-27) to qualify for the semi-finals of the Sibu Snooker Challenge held at Lucky 7 Snooker Club on Wednesday night.

The 67-year-old evergreen, the oldest player in the state team, easily took the first two frames.

However, in the third game and trailing at 17-37, Danny hit the brick wall when he suddenly found himself `snoked’ by the final red ball.

He tried but it required only his fifth effort before he finally rescued the red.

By then, it was too late as Joe had jumped ahead 51-17.

In the fourth frame, Danny surged to an early lead and never allowed Joe any chance of a comeback before wrapping up the game 58-27.

Over at the other table, the flamboyant Pau Chiong Kiong continued his relentless march to the semi-final when he outclassed last year’s Executive 3 runner-up Sim Hong Hui 3-1 (60-16, 39-53, 50-15, 61-32).

Pau has emerged as the dark horse of the tournament.

After losing the second frame, Pau upped his tempo in the third and fourth frames and his potting accuracy, coupled with a little bit of luck, secured his win.

“I must admit that luck is on my side. Nevertheless, I do hope to continue my winning streak as the match advances,” he said.

Danny will take on Pau while Mark Yeo will cross swords with Law Chiik Tiing in the semi-finals at Executive 3 Snooker Centre at 8 pm tonight.

The final showdown will be at Cueball International at 8pm on April 24.
