SIBU: Sri Sibu Taekwondo Club (SSTC) returned with six gold, one silver and two bronze medals from the State Taekwondo (WTF) Championship 2016 held in Kuching last weekend.

The six gold medallists were Mohd Helmi Chieng, Mohd Firdaus Chieng, Calvin Li, Spencer Ngat Sibat, Elsdon Wong Jun Wei, Clement Li and Christine Li.

Mohd Helmi also secured a silver medal while the bronzes came from Stephanie Nantai Sibat and Ho Ming Hin.

SSTC honorary advisor Datuk Lau Keung Chai said the results were a pleasant surprise.

“Most of our exponents are young and inexperienced and to be able to come back with such an outstanding performance is beyond expectations.”

Lau also advised the athletes to train harder and earn the selection for the coming Sukma.

“The final list for the Sukma exponents is yet to be released. Train hard as all of you still stand a chance to get a ticket to Sukma.”

More than 300 exponents took part in the championship organised by Sarawak Taekwondo Association (STA/WTF).

The championship aimed to prepare athletes for the upcoming National Taekwondo (WTF) Championship and shortlist exponents for the 18th Sukma and other national and international tournaments.
