TAWAU: The Kalabakan Umno Division has demanded that the Merotai State seat be returned to the party in the 14th General Election.

Its chief and Kalabakan member of parliament, Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh, said the seat should be returned to Umno as about 75 percent of the population in the area are Malays and Bumiputeras.

“Many residents and branch heads who met me said they no longer want to be represented by a leader who is not from Umno in the forthcoming elections,” he said yesterday.

“Therefore, we hope that the leadership of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) and State will fulfill their request because if not, BN will lose Merotai in the elections,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Ghapur also stressed that Kalabakan Umno would not work hard to help the BN win the seat if the candidate was not from Umno.

The Merotai seat is currently held by Datuk Pang Yuk Ming of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
